Sowing, Spacing, Planting, Picking, Watering and More
How to be successful in growing vegetables.
In ‘Skills for Growing’ I share the knowledge and techniques you need for success in all aspects of vegetable gardening, based on my decades of experience.
My desire is to save you time, effort and money, through making all your inputs effective. From seeds and water, to the space in your garden. There are three chapters with vital information about spacing, and a harvesting table for easier planning of second plantings to keep space full.
I advise on how to create planting plans, succeed with succession and reduce rotation. There are chapters on saving your own seed, propagation, multisowing, spacing for all common vegetables, methods of harvesting and how they influence growth, watering (both when and how much) and using covers for warmth as well as pest protection. I also describe successful winter gardening, and growing perennial vegetables.
The book is 56000 words and comprises 5 parts for the 17 chapters, all illustrated with beautiful, captioned photos from my no dig, organic garden in Somerset, Southwest UK.
The book is a fantastic resource for anyone wishing to learn new skills, or to improve and tune the skills they already have, in order to grow bigger and healthier harvests from a given space.
“Skills for Growing is overflowing with advice and instructions based on years’ worth of detailed data gathering and observation. It is vibrantly illustrated with images of the crops he grows at his market garden Homeacres, which are refreshingly unromantic and so genuinely complementary to the written guidance, making this a feast for both the brain and eyes.”

Leon Butterfield –
This book has really enhanced my whole food growing experience.
The information within is concise and you could say clinical, but at the same time easy to read – natural and organic even(excuse the pun). Seriously it’s full of practical information but friendly and beautiful too!
It gives me a feeling that I can do it, with the fundamentals of growing laid out and explained in layman’s terms. It will help anyone grow food and enjoy doing so too.
An all-round asset to an allotment holder like myself and it’s only April, let’s grow!

This book is fantastic, so much information, I’m really enjoying using it for reference etc. I don’t think I’ll ever need another vegetable gardening book…..unless it’s another Charles Dowding book of course!!

This book is a valuable collection of useful information presented in a concise, friendly and readable manner, interspersed with plenty of pictures which compliment the writing.
It is a hard-back and was signed too, which was a pleasant surprise.
Kate Hall –
A fantastic book! I’ve kept a little veg patch for a few years now, and began discovering the wonder of no-dig just last year. I have watched lots of Charles’ videos and have learned a vast amount, but I was looking for something that would help me understand my own garden, so I could plan and prepare for the season (and years) ahead. This book does all that and so much more! It’s packed full of tuition and knowledge. It’s so clearly written it’s like Charles himself is alongside you, walking you through the garden and answering all your questions. (I particularly need to improve my ability with first and second plantings, and gasped aloud when I saw the page with it all laid out in a big easy-to-follow chart. It was like a magic trick! How did you know that’s just what I was looking for?) The many photographs are all highly relevant, well captioned and cross reference the text and each other. There are even pointers to youtube videos for further information. Every word of this book is instructive (no blethering!) and I’d recommend it to anyone.
Charles –
Thank you Kate, I’m reassured to read this since you are one of the first people to give a detailed review.
It’s hard to tell with your own book and I’m happy that you find it useful, and wish you many productive years ahead.
I like the no blethering!
